Shin(my husband) is taking me to a little Italian bistro that opened recently right next door to his shop(Shin makes race cars). He sez the owner is really particular about making authentic dishes and has been raving about the place since it opened 2 months ago. I'm making Shin drive so I can drink wine!

Well, I ordered my 2 turkeys but I have yet to plan my parties! Usually they are sometime in December but I will be out of the country until the 28th so it's looking like New Year's parties!

It was! I am still eating leftovers! One huge loaf has about a half a cup of extra virgin olive oil in it so it is pretty rich! I mix a bit of balsamic vinegar in a little bowl of olive oil for dipping!

We eat polenta with a lot of stuff... including fried pork and fried fish... but in the morning my mother used to make polenta, then put hard boiled eggs and sourcream in it (sometimes even cheese) and add some butter... It tasted great!

Lately I hate my breakfasts... no ideas for something new and no time to do it anyway!

I usually do eat breakfast but have been skipping it lately. Usually its always the same - one cup of almond milk, a few scoops of rice protein powder, fresh unhulled sesame seeds (lots of calcium and iron), sunflower seeds, or sometimes pumpkin too. I then add a dash of cinnamon and some vanilla if I have it...berries in season for added flavor.

Mix it all in my blender, then pour it over some whole grain cereal, or oatmeal. Good mix of protein, fat and low GI carbs, keeps me going for 3-4 hours usually.

When I was younger my breakfast followed what my MA teacher taught me - Green or Oolong tea, umeboshi rolled in licorice powder, and usually a small bit of fruit or grain cereal. Then some Chinese MA practice of course!

Actually I've been on a big cornbread kick lately. I make fresh cornbread with dinner, then use the left overs to cut up thin and sautee in olive oil. I then throw in some eggs and make an omelete...its great!

It reminds me of some of the dishes my Spanish relatives used to make...there was one breakfast dish called "mega" (pronounced Mee-ga, spelling might be wrong) which was usually cornmeal/pancake type mix fried and stirred/chopped so it became small and crunchy little nuggets (usually the same type of batter used for polenta). Then there would be salami, bacon, ham, saugsage etc cooked with it, with the meat in the center and the cooked mega around it. It was always served in the center of the table and everyone just ate it out of the pan!

So good...so fattening...I gotta give that a try one of these days.

Squirrel - Any similar dishes like this in Romania? I know you talked about polenta before...but I think its different than what my relatives made.

Here you go. Here's a basic, classic recipe. One note though. If you have the time, bake the sweet potatoes instead. Taste and texture are much better.

Sweet Potato Pie

2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup butter or margarine
3 large eggs
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon lemon extract
1 (12-ounce) package frozen deep-dish piecrusts, thawed
Garnishes: whipped cream, grated nutmeg

Cook sweet potato in boiling water to cover 30 minutes or until tender; drain. Beat sweet potato and butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth. Add eggs and next 6 ingredients, beating well. Pour mixture evenly into each piecrust. Bake at 350?on lower oven rack for 45 to 50 minutes or until set.
